Our History & Activities

Preserving the Spirit of Tea for Four Generations

Since our founding in 1921, we have spent over 100 years
in Nagano as a specialty store for tea utensils and ceramics.
Today, fourth-generation owner Taro Naito carries on this
tradition while proposing ways to enjoy Japanese culture
that suit modern lifestyles.
We are more than just a retail shop.
Through tea ceremony classes, cultural events, and social
media outreach, we are dedicated to passing Japanese culture
on to future generations and sharing it with the world.

Tea Ceremony Specialists Trained in Kyoto

Our shop is supported by professionals who trained at
the prestigious Urasenke Gakuen in Kyoto.

Taro Naito (4th Generation Owner)

Certified Associate Professor of Urasenke (tea name: Sota).
A graduate of Urasenke Gakuen, he possesses deep knowledge
and skills in traditional tea ceremony. He leads the shop
while selecting tea utensils and preserving cultural traditions.

Shiho Naito

Graduate of Urasenke Gakuen and certified tea instructor
(tea name: Soshi). She specializes in teaching beginners and
international guests, offering accessible lessons including
table-style tea ceremony and classes for children.

A Team Dedicated to Hospitality

At Sukiya Naito Pottery, not only the owners but also all staff
actively practice tea ceremony. We aim to be more than
salespeople—we strive to be partners who share and
communicate the beauty of Japanese culture.

Supporting Artists & Craftsmanship

We see it as our mission to support talented artisans and share
their work with the world.

  • Exhibitions Connecting You with Artists
We regularly host exhibitions featuring leading contemporary
ceramicists and craftsmen, offering rare opportunities to engage
 directly with creators.
  • Supporting Both Masters and Emerging Artists
From masters preserving traditional techniques to young artists
shaping the future, we create opportunities for meaningful
craftsmanship and authentic connections between makers and
customers.

Every tea bowl you choose helps support the future of Japanese
traditional crafts.

5.Uji Matcha “Kogakuen”

Premium Matcha from Japan’s Finest Region

The matcha we value most is “Kogakuen,” produced in Uji,
Kyoto—Japan’s most renowned tea-growing region.
Carefully selected by our fourth-generation owner, this is
a top-quality matcha we confidently recommend.

Originally served to athletes and guests during the Nagano
Winter Olympics, Kogakuen matcha has since been loved by
tea practitioners, temples, and instructors across all schools of
tea ceremony.

Tradition Meets Modern Innovation

To maintain freshness, we use eco-friendly, functional
resealable packaging instead of traditional tins. This protects
the matcha from light and air, preserving its freshly ground
aroma.
We also offer international shipping and cashless payment
options, ensuring a welcoming and convenient experience for
customers from around the world.
